Canada’s parliament has labelled China’s treatment of its Muslim Uyghurs as “genocide”!

The House of Commons in Canada has voted overwhelmingly to recognize China’s treatment of its Uighur minority as genocide. The motion passed with a vote of 266 to 0, gaining support from all opposition parties and a few lawmakers from the governing Liberal Party. This makes Canada the second country, after the United States, to officially acknowledge China’s actions as genocide.

Foreign Affairs Minister Marc Garneau was present in parliament during the vote and abstained from voting “on behalf of the government of Canada.” Prior to the vote, opposition leader Erin O’Toole emphasized the importance of sending a strong message in defense of human rights, even if it involves sacrificing economic opportunities.

This non-binding motion on Monday is the latest development in the strained relations between Canada and China. Human rights organizations estimate that China has detained up to a million Muslim Uighurs in what the state calls “re-education camps.” Investigations by the BBC suggest that Uighurs are subjected to forced labor.

Both current and former US Secretaries of State, Anthony Blinken and Mike Pompeo, have categorized China’s policies against Uighur Muslims and other ethnic minorities in Xinjiang as genocide.
