Local media reported Friday that the social media accounts of Wang Sicong, a Chinese citizen and billionaire who spoke out against the country’s media repression and strict lockdowns in Shanghai, were banned.
He had about 40 million followers on Weibo.
On April 5, Sicong had called a CCTV News post about U.S. Covid data “fake news” and called on CCTV to delete it.
Recently, he also wrote the following on various Chinese social media.
“The nucleic acid test each morning isn’t about whether you’re positive or negative; it’s about your servility and guts. Not gonna do the test anymore from today onwards.”
“In the 21st century, the only possible reason for not being able to eat is because of politics.”
There are rumors that Wang Sicong was arrested for “seeking quarrels and provoking riots” (a common accusation used by CCP authorities to suppress dissent).
Many net users were outraged by the Chinese authorities’ actions toward Wang, but some also questioned:
“If a very well-known billionaire is arrested, how are we, as ordinary people, supposed to succeed in a rebellion against government repression? “
