At the United Nations General Assembly on Saturday, Foreign Minister Wang Yi used a new metaphor: ‘Any move to obstruct China’s cause of reunification is bound to be crushed by the wheels of history’.

And the Chinese ambassador to Australia, Xiao Qian, spoke of the terrifying possibilities of “re-educating” the Taiwanese people and punishing purported separatists. It was a direct declaration of what unification actually entails: it would criminalize Taiwanese citizens for being of Taiwanese descent, demolish the current structure of Taiwanese society, have horrifying implications for human rights, and have uncontrollable ramifications on regional security.
