Through their deft use of social media, Falun Gong practitioners have managed to draw national and even international attention to the case of orthopedic surgeon Li Lizhuang, but fresh horrifying revelations have surfaced.

Born in 1973, Li completed his studies at Harbin Medical University in 1995. He began practicing Falun Gong that same year. He seems to have been promised a successful career as an attending physician at the First Affiliated Hospital of Harbin Medical University’s Orthopedic Surgery Department.
But during the 1999 crackdown on Falun Gong, Li was subjected to constant police harassment. After being detained in 2001, he received a sentence that included six and a half years in prison followed by time spent in a labor camp. He claimed to have been frequently tortured with electric batons while strapped to an iron chair, but the worst treatment he received came from other prisoners—common criminals who were not bound by the guards.

They made him walk around in his undies, take a cold bath in -20°C water outside, and repeatedly rape him by sticking different things in his anus.
When he was eventually freed, he found that no hospital would hire him and that he had been dismissed. All he could do was sell clothes at open-air marketplaces. He avoided further arrest and maintained a low profile for many years.
Falun Gong suggested meditation in response to COVID-19, claiming it would strengthen the immune system. Reciting the “Nine True Words,” or “Fa-Lun Da-Fa Hao” and “Zhen-Shan-Ren Hao,” which are the words that correlate to the nine Chinese characters, was advised. “Falun Dafa is Great” and “Truthfulness, Compassion, and Forbearance Are Good” are their respective meanings.

The “Nine True Words” gained a lot of traction. They also demonstrated Falun Gong’s continued presence to the CCP. Li joined a group of Harbin practitioners who called friends and family during the lockdown to teach them the “Nine True Words” exercise and to encourage them to remain composed. On April 8, 2020, the authorities found the network and detained seven practitioners, including Li.
The Daqing City Ranghulu District Court in Heilongjiang province sentenced them to a range of jail terms on November 17, 2021. Li received a severe sentence of ten years and eight months in jail in light of his prior offenses.

Now, information on Li is being smuggled out of Hulan Prison in Harbin, disseminated via social media, and sent to a number of human rights organizations. Li is once more subjected to severe torture, this time with the use of electric batons, pepper spray, and needles. He is made to drink pee, wear a straitjacket, and endure more electric baton abuse to his anus and penis.
The once exceptionally talented surgeon should stay behind bars until 2030, if he survives.
