The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Japan Self-Defense Forces expressed concern over recent aggressive actions by the China Coast Guard (CCG) following a collision between Filipino and Chinese vessels at Ayungin Shoal in the West Philippine Sea.

In a statement on Thursday, AFP Chief-of-Staff General Romeo Brawner Jr. and Japan Self-Defense Forces Chief-of-Staff General Yoshihide Yoshida held a video call to discuss future cooperation in response to the maritime incident that resulted in injuries to several Filipino troops.

“We appreciate Japan’s support. Japan was among the first countries to condemn the actions of the CCG,” said Brawner.

Yoshida reaffirmed Japan’s steadfast support for the Philippines, stating, “JSDF stands with the AFP and will enhance its collaboration with the Philippines and like-minded nations.”

In related news, photos released by the AFP on Wednesday showed CCG personnel wielding bladed and pointed weapons at Filipino troops during a routine rotation and resupply mission to Ayungin Shoal on Monday. One image depicted a CCG member reportedly threatening a Filipino soldier with a pickaxe. Another photo illustrated damage to the navigational and communications equipment of the Filipino troops caused by Chinese personnel.

Reports indicate that the Philippines and Japan are on track to finalize a reciprocal access agreement in July. This agreement would permit their respective military forces to conduct training exercises in each other’s territories amidst heightened maritime tensions between Manila and Beijing.
