FBI Warns Chinese Hackers Target Home Internet Routers!

The ongoing cyberwar between the U.S. and China has a new front: the FBI warns that Chinese hackers are “hijacking” certain internet routers.

“These attacks could target everyday businesses or individuals, turning their devices into platforms for the Chinese government to attack U.S. interests, including defense and government sectors,” the FBI stated.

The attacks focus on older routers with outdated security from Cisco and NetGear. Hackers can covertly install malware and use these routers to launch cyberattacks on critical U.S. infrastructure. Investigators have already taken down “hundreds” of infected routers in homes and small businesses.

“Hackers are targeting our critical infrastructure, our water treatment plants, our electrical grid, our oil and natural gas pipelines, our transportation systems. And the risk that poses to every American requires our attention now,” FBI Director Christopher Wray told a Congressional committee. “China’s hackers are positioning on American infrastructure in preparation to wreak havoc and cause real world harm to American citizens and communities.”
