Russia and China could draw the World into World War III” by establishing a new “axis of aggression”
The recent joint air patrol by Chinese and Russian bomber planes off the coast of the U.S. has sparked concerns about a potential new “axis of aggression” that could escalate into a global conflict, according to an expert.
On Wednesday, two Chinese and two Russian long-range bombers were observed flying over international waters near Alaska, prompting U.S. and Canadian fighter jets to be dispatched in response. Both Beijing and Moscow confirmed the next day that they had conducted a joint air patrol over the Bering Sea, which separates Russia and Alaska. The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) stated that this military activity did not pose an immediate threat.
However, this unprecedented joint action comes after months of increasing military collaboration between China and Russia, raising alarm among Western officials. Professor Anthony Glees from the University of Buckingham warned that this development could signal the formation of a new axis similar to the one seen during World War II, with Putin and Xi aiming to “undermine NATO,” and suggested that this should be a cause for concern in the UK as well.
Glees described the bomber flight as a significant development. “This is the first time, as far as we know, that Russian and Chinese aircraft have operated together over the Bering Sea. Although it was international airspace, the joint nature of the operation and the involvement of both Russian and Chinese bombers is noteworthy,” he said.
He noted that while there have been previous joint operations, such as reconnaissance missions, the use of bombers represents a more direct threat to NATO’s northern allies.
