This year, Apple began assembling its iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max models in India, marking the first time Pro models are being produced locally. Previously, the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus were the first iPhones manufactured in India prior to their global launch. Since 2021, Apple’s contract manufacturers—Foxconn, Pegatron, and Wistron (now acquired by Tata Electronics)—have been producing standard iPhone models and the lower-cost iPhone SE in India. iPhone exports reportedly account for over 73 percent of India’s total smartphone export value.
Although Apple continues to rely on Chinese firms as its primary manufacturing partners, it has been expanding its supply chains to other countries, including India, Vietnam, and Brazil. As of April 2024, India accounted for 14 percent of global iPhone production, with $14 billion worth of units shipped during FY23-24. Foxconn produced 67 percent of these units, Pegatron 17 percent, and the remainder came from Tata/Wistron.
India is projected to become Apple’s third-largest market by 2025, with the company recording eight consecutive quarters of growth in the country. In 2023, Apple’s revenue in India reached nearly USD 6.8 billion, reflecting a 48 percent year-on-year increase, driven by rising demand for premium products and the accessibility of financing options.
