Satellite imagery has revealed that Beijing is constructing a network of stealth-penetrating radars as part of its efforts to assert control over the South China Sea.
A report from the British think-tank Chatham House highlights new construction on Triton Island in the contested Paracel Islands. The images show a distinctive arrangement of SIAR (synthetic impulse and aperture radar) poles, along with a control tower and several mobile missile staging areas.
According to the report, the completion of this radar system would significantly enhance China’s signals interception and electronic warfare capabilities in the Paracel Islands, contributing to a broader surveillance network throughout much of the South China Sea. This development comes amid the deployment of advanced stealth combat aircraft by the United States and Australia, aimed at deterring Beijing’s aggressive territorial claims in the region.
